In addition to an advanced torrefaction system, INL installed a state-of-the-art chemical preprocessing system. It uses thermal, chemical or biological treatments to make raw bioenergy materials easier to store, handle, transport and convert into biofuels. Also, the Bioenergy Feedstock Library is an online repository that contains information about more than 60,000 biomass samples and 70 different kinds of material—from miscanthus to corn stover. The library has grown to nearly 200 users and has drawn more than 30,000 page views. INL scientists are helping find efficient ways for converting raw biomass (above and below, left) to bioenergy feedstock commodities (middle and far left).
