The full complement of capabilities allows INL to respond to today’s nuclear energy challenges, serve as a multiprogram laboratory with broad competencies in energy and national security, and address future challenges. GROWING Designing Better Catalysts The Center for Advanced Energy Studies at INL is now home to two of the nation’s three Temporal Analysis of Products (TAP) reactor systems. TAP systems provide a way to unlock catalysts’ secrets and use them more efficiently in the manufacture of platform chemicals. INL houses the TAP reactors at CAES to ease access for industrial and academic collaborators. In fact, the second TAP reactor system was donated by an industrial partner. INL researchers are engaging scientists from other national laboratories and universities to focus on two high-impact areas: ammonia synthesis and converting natural gas stranded in remote locations to ethylene, alcohols and other high- value chemicals. Plans underway to expand Research and Education Campus INL is working on procurement of two leased facilities that will enhance the nuclear energy and national security missions at the lab. The Collaborative Computing Center (C3) will support the advanced computation needs of the lab, academia and industry. It will include a high-performance computing data center and collaborative people-focused work areas. Cybercore is envisioned as a virtual research park that will unify and integrate resources for urgent and high-consequence national control system security challenges. The Center for Advanced Energy Studies at INL hosts two of only threeTAP reactor systems in the nation.
